1/4 inch graph paper
The square size US classrooms mean when they say graph paper, and the one architects mean when they draw at a quarter inch to the foot. The sheet below is already set to it — a quarter inch is exactly 6.35 mm, and the bar at the bottom lets you check your printer agreed.
What a quarter inch square actually measures
A quarter inch is 6.35 mm exactly, so four squares make an inch and sixteen make a square inch. That is why the heavy line on this sheet defaults to every fourth square: each bold block is one inch, and you can count inches off the page without a ruler.

Why not 34 columns on Letter? An 8.5 in sheet holds 34 quarter inches, but no printer can put ink on the outer few millimetres, so the grid is inset and then centred. The leftover fraction is split evenly between the two edges rather than dumped on one side, which is why the sheet reads as deliberate instead of cropped.
Where a quarter inch is the size people expect
Most of these carry an unspoken assumption that one square equals one unit. Print at the wrong scale and the unit quietly stops being a unit.
US classroom
Quad ruled notebooks and loose leaf sold for American schools are almost always four squares to the inch. If a worksheet says "use graph paper" without saying which, this is it.
Coordinate graphing
Large enough to write a number inside a square, small enough that a first-quadrant plot with a sensible range still fits on one page. The inch-wide heavy blocks make a natural axis interval.
Architectural scale
The standard US floor plan scale is a quarter inch to the foot, which makes one square exactly one foot. A 12 × 15 ft room is 12 × 15 squares, counted off with no arithmetic at all.
Sketching and thumbnails
Four to the inch is coarse enough to draw over without the grid fighting the drawing, which is why it is the usual ruling for perspective grids and layout thumbnails.
Quilting and sewing
The quarter inch seam allowance is the standard in patchwork, so a quarter inch grid lets you draft a block and read the allowance straight off the paper.
Knitting and crochet charts
Big enough for a symbol to stay legible in pencil. For a finer chart, or for cross stitch, an eighth inch grid is usually the better fit.
Sizes a quarter inch gets confused with
Two of these are close enough to look right on screen and be wrong on paper. The difference compounds: across the 30 columns of a Letter sheet, a 5 mm grid ends up 40 mm narrower than a quarter inch grid.

Before you print
Print dialogs shrink pages by roughly four to six percent by default, which turns a quarter inch square into about 6.0 mm and quietly breaks any drawing where one square meant one foot or one stitch. Set the scale to 100% or Actual Size, then lay a ruler on the bars at the bottom of the sheet: the upper bar must read 100 mm and the lower one 4 in. Questions about quarter inch grids
Is 1/4 inch graph paper the same as quad ruled?
Usually yes. Quad ruled is the US stationery term for a square grid, and the common ruling is four squares to the inch, which is a quarter inch square. It is worth checking the packet though, because a few products sold as quad ruled are five squares to the inch instead, and five to the inch is a fifth of an inch rather than a quarter.
Is a quarter inch the same as 5 mm?
No, and this is the mistake that ruins the most printouts. A quarter inch is 6.35 mm, so a quarter inch square has about 61 percent more area than a 5 mm one. They look similar in a preview and diverge fast on paper: 30 squares of one is 190.5 mm, 30 squares of the other is 150 mm.
How many quarter inch squares fit on a page?
On Letter with the measuring bars switched on, 30 across by 38 down. Turn the bars off and the grid grows to 30 by 40. On A4 it is 29 by 40 with the bars, 29 by 43 without. The counts differ because A4 is narrower and taller than Letter, not because anything was scaled.
Where should the heavy lines go?
Every fourth square, which is the default here. That makes each bold block exactly one inch, so you can read inches off the sheet directly and use the bold lines as axis intervals when graphing. Set the field to 0 if you want a plain grid with no emphasis at all.
Can I use this for a floor plan at 1/4 inch to the foot?
Yes, and that is the neatest use of this size. At quarter inch scale one square is one foot, so a room is measured in squares with no conversion. A Letter sheet at 30 by 38 squares covers 30 by 38 feet, which is most of a small house on a single page. Print at 100% or the scale is no longer a scale.
Can I get the same grid on A4?
Yes, change the paper selector above and the sheet rebuilds. Quarter inch on A4 is slightly unusual outside North America, but it is the right choice if you are working to an imperial scale on paper bought outside the US. Just make sure the paper you choose is the paper actually loaded in the printer.
