10 squares per inch graph paper
Ten to the inch, so each square is a tenth and ten squares are one inch. "10 squares per inch" and "1/10 inch graph paper" are the same paper, described from opposite ends — the naming causes far more confusion than the grid ever does.
Same grid, two names
Counting squares per inch gives ten; measuring one square gives a tenth of an inch, which is 2.54 mm exactly. Suppliers use whichever phrasing suits their catalogue, so a pad labelled 10×10 and a file labelled 1/10 inch will lay on top of each other perfectly. The bold line defaults to every tenth square, making each block one inch.

The decimal is the point. With ten squares to the inch, a reading of 3.7 inches is three bold blocks and seven squares — no fractions, no mental conversion. That is why it became the standard for engineering computation, where everything else on the page is already decimal.

Decimal drafting scales
Civil and site drawing uses scales like one inch to ten, twenty or fifty feet. A tenth inch grid steps directly in those units instead of fighting them.
Lab plotting
Data recorded to one or two decimal places lands on gridlines rather than between them, which makes plotting faster and reading back more reliable.
Interpolating between points
Fine enough that a value between gridlines can be estimated confidently, without the sheet becoming a tint the way a 2 mm grid can.

Ten to the inch divides cleanly into tens and hundreds, so axis scaling rarely needs an awkward interval.

Sizes ten to the inch gets confused with
Two and a half millimetres is the trap. It is four hundredths of a millimetre off per square, and about 3 mm off across a full sheet.

Before you print
On a decimal grid, scaling is quietly corrosive: a five percent shrink means ten squares no longer measure an inch, and every value you read off the sheet inherits the error. Questions about ten to the inch
Is 10 squares per inch the same as 1/10 inch graph paper?
Yes. They are two ways of describing one grid: count the squares in an inch and you get ten, measure a single square and you get a tenth of an inch. A pad labelled 10×10 to the inch and a file labelled 1/10 inch produce identical paper.
Is this the same as engineering paper?
The grid is. A traditional engineering computation pad is this ruling, usually printed faintly and often on a green or buff tinted sheet with a ruled border. What you get here is the grid itself in whatever colour you pick, on plain paper.
How many squares fit on a page?
On Letter with the measuring bars on, 77 across by 95 down, which is 7,315 squares. Without the bars it becomes 77 by 102. A4 gives 74 by 101 with the bars and 74 by 109 without.
Why 77 columns and not 85?
An 8.5 inch sheet holds 85 tenths edge to edge, but the printable area is smaller than the paper. After a 10 mm margin each side, 77 whole squares remain and the leftover fraction is split between the two margins so the grid sits centred.
What line colour and weight work best?
Grey or the default blue at the standard weight. At 2.54 mm a black grid reads as a solid tone from any distance and competes with pencil work. If you intend to photocopy the sheet, grey reproduces better than a pale blue.
Is a tenth of an inch the same as 2.5 mm?
No, it is 2.54 mm. The 1.6 percent difference is undetectable on one square and reaches about 3 mm across a full sheet, which is enough to matter if you are overlaying the printout on something else.
